Can plastics be made from plants ?

Innovation

Some plastics are bio-based, meaning they are made from plants. Among these, for example, is PLA, a 100% bio-based and biodegradable plastic made from corn starch. By combining it with flax fiber, it is possible to create a bio-composite.

What is a bio-composite? It is the assembly of two immiscible materials, here a natural resin (a matrix) and reinforcements that come in the form of microspheres, fibers, or also natural fabrics.

Demgy offers the transformation of an innovative bio-composite made from natural fiber: Flaxcomp®. This is the first 100% recyclable bio-composite since it is made from woven flax fibers and corn starch (PLA).
